US issues 180-day waiver on Syria sanctions

The US has issued a 180-day waiver on sanctions against Syria to facilitate essential services. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that this move aligns with President Trump’s vision for improved US-Syria relations. The decision follows recent talks between Trump and Syria’s interim leader.

AhlulBayt News Agency: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a 180-day waiver on sanctions that were imposed on Syria in 2019, according to a press release from the US Department of State.

The move aims to facilitate the provision of electricity and water in Syria. Rubio stated that this decision represents the first step in delivering on President Donald Trump’s vision of a new relationship between Syria and the United States. He emphasized that Trump is offering the Syrian government an opportunity to promote peace and stability both within Syria and in its relations with neighboring countries.

Rubio further explained that the President expects the sanctions relief to be followed by prompt action from the Syrian government on key policy priorities.

On Friday, the US Department of the Treasury issued a general license to provide immediate sanctions relief for Syria.

Additionally, on May 14, US President Donald Trump held talks with Syria’s interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Riyadh.
